Tonaquint Nature Center
Where peaceful greenery meets hidden-gem charm
Tonaquint gives us a completely different look for photo sessions, and it's actually two spots in one. The Gardens area has a big grass area, planter boxes, palm trees, and a vine-covered arch that's perfect for portraits. The Nature Center side features pine trees, beautiful wooden bridges over small riverbeds, a peaceful pond, winding trails through overgrown greenery, and even a small amphitheater. Between the two areas, you get amazing variety without leaving the park.
There’s roughly a mile of trail looping throughout the park, offering an enormous variety of photo possibilities. There's a colorful bridge that photographs beautifully, an observation deck over the pond, tall trees, lush grasses, and plenty of benches along the way. It's especially nice on hot summer days when the shade makes outdoor sessions much more comfortable.
The trails are fairly flat and easy to walk, though they're not fully paved like some of our other spots. Most families with strollers can manage the main paths without issue. It's a popular location in spring and fall, so you might see other photographers around, but there's plenty of space for everyone.

Good to Know
When to Go
Golden hour at Tonaquint is beautiful—the light filters through the trees and creates a soft, warm glow over everything. Aim for 7-8pm in spring and summer, or 4-6pm in fall and winter. Morning sessions work wonderfully here too, especially if you want fresh, dewy greenery and soft natural light.
Midday is actually more comfortable here than at our desert locations, thanks to all the shade. But you'll still get the most flattering, romantic light during golden hour. The nature center is open during regular park hours (7AM - 10PM), so you have flexibility with scheduling.
Through the Seasons
Tonaquint looks beautiful year-round, with lush foliage and the peaceful pond as constants. Spring brings blooming flowers and fresh greenery. Summer is especially popular here because the shade makes it one of the most comfortable spots during hot weather, and the pond stays active with water fowl and small wildlife. Fall brings golden leaves and cooler temperatures, while winter offers a more minimalist look with bare branches, though the evergreen plants and water features keep it visually interesting.
Getting There & Parking
Tonaquint Nature Center is located in Tonaquint Park at 1851 S Dixie Drive in St. George. There's plenty of free parking in the park, and the nature center trails are just a short walk from the parking areas. Once you're at the trailhead, the outer loop is only about a half-mile total, so everything is easily accessible. The trails are well-maintained, though not fully paved, so we suggest wearing comfortable shoes.
Who This Location Suits Best
Tonaquint is perfect for anyone who wants a softer, more natural aesthetic. Families with young kids love it because the pond is engaging and the trails are easy to navigate. Couples and engagement sessions turn out beautifully here as well due to the greenery and water creating a romantic, intimate feel. Senior portraits work great too, especially for anyone who wants something outside the typical desert backdrop.
This location is also ideal for anyone who wants to include pets in their photoshoot; the trails and other natural settings are perfect for including family dogs. If you're drawn to lush, green environments, or if you just want somewhere comfortable and shaded, Tonaquint is your spot. It's a hidden gem that delivers a completely different look from our other locations.

Is This Your Spot?
If Tonaquint Nature Center feels like the right setting for your session, we'd love to photograph you here. Our photographers know the best spots along the trails, where the light filters through the trees most beautifully, and how to work with the pond and bridge for the best compositions.
Not sure if this is the location for you? That's completely fine. We shoot at several spots around St. George, each with its own vibe. Some are dramatic like Pioneer Park, others are open and grassy like Kirkland Fields. The best location is simply the one that feels right for you.
